Routleys Turns 60 in Style

FAMILY business Routleys Bathroom Kitchen Laundry is marking its 60th birthday with a redevelopment of its showroom, offices and warehouse facilities at Malvern.

The plumbing supplies business, run by Trevor and Judy Routley, commenced the expansion project in October.

The first stage – an office complex on a property adjacent to its Unley Rd showroom – is complete, and works have commenced on an expansion of its showroom and warehouse.

“We’re completely redesigning the showroom and re-fitting it with the very latest products,” Ms Routley said. “It has been designed in Germany by Villeroy & Boch and with the expanded warehouse, we’ll be able to hold a lot more stock.

“We took the opportunity, with the downturn in the building industry, to finish the renovation. Inevitably, like everything, the market works in cycles. It will bounce back and we’ll be ready when it does.”

Trevor’s parents, David and Margaret, established the Routleys business in 1953 in Kensington – initially focusing on sales to trade customers.

The business relocated to Mile End, from which it operated for 30 years, before moving to Unley Rd in the 1990s.”We’d always been selling to the plumber and builder markets but when we moved to Unley Rd we really drove the retail side of the business,” Ms Routley said.

The business employs 35 staff and supplies bathroom, kitchen and laundry brands including Miele, Rogerseller, Villeroy & Boch, Hansgrohe and Caroma.

Routleys has been supplying Beechwood Homes since the home builder’s inception.

“We’ve been supplying Beechwood for 25 years,” Ms Routley said. “It’s a fantastic company to deal with – they’re innovative and their homes are always finished to a very high standard.”

The expansion of the Routleys facility is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
